In low-temperature cold storage environments, the selection of racks and pallets becomes particularly critical due to the combined effects of humidity and temperature. Wooden pallets, owing to their material properties, cannot withstand the damp conditions typical of cold storage. Currently, steel pallets and plastic pallets are the two most common choices on the market. So, what are the respective advantages and disadvantages of each, and which is more suitable for cold storage applications?

Steel Pallet

  • High Load Capacity: The strength and stability of steel enable pallets to bear heavier loads while resisting deformation or damage in cold storage environments.
  • Low-Temperature Resistance: Steel pallets also offer robust corrosion resistance, maintaining optimal performance for extended periods even in low-temperature, high-humidity conditions. They withstand frequent temperature fluctuations during cold storage access.
  • Superior Thermal Conductivity: The high thermal conductivity of metal accelerates cargo cooling, shortens pre-cooling time, and enhances cold storage energy efficiency.
  • Extended Service Life: Longer lifespan with lower damage rates.

However, steel pallets also have some drawbacks. Their production costs are relatively high, making them less cost-effective initially. Nevertheless, due to their extended service life, the overall cost over the long term may be lower than that of plastic pallets. Additionally, steel pallets are heavier and not as lightweight as plastic pallets.

Plastic Pallet

  • Lightweight for easier handling, reducing labor costs.
  • With lower production costs, it offers greater affordability compared to steel pallets.
  • The material should preferably be HDPE, as it offers superior low-temperature resistance, excellent electrical insulation properties, and outstanding chemical stability, and is less prone to brittleness in cold environments.

It should be noted that while some high-quality plastic pallets can function adequately in cold storage, their load-bearing capacity and durability typically fall short of steel pallets. Additionally, plastic pallets may become brittle and rigid at low temperatures, increasing the risk of damage and shortening their service life.

In summary, both steel and plastic pallets have their respective advantages and disadvantages when used in cold storage facilities. When making a selection, it is essential to comprehensively consider the specific environment of the cold storage, usage requirements, and cost budget. If the cold storage environment is harsh, demanding high load-bearing capacity and durability, and long-term usage costs are not a concern, steel pallets may be more suitable. Conversely, if the cold storage environment is relatively mild, strict cost control is required, and lightweight, easy-to-maneuver pallets are needed, plastic pallets could be a good choice.
